In my 90s childhood
Star Wars
obsession, I remember hearing a
lot about the fabled NPR radio drama adaptations (read: “podcast”) of
the original trilogy. They were supposed to be canonical, in-as-much as
they were Lucas-approved stories that expanded on the familiar ones we
already knew...
And
wow
, they are expanded — the
A New Hope
radio drama is 13 hours long!
I just started the first one - it’s more than a little weird hearing Luke’s voice as anything other than Hamill’s.

You think that’s weird, try reading Alan Dean Foster’s
Splinter of the Mind’s Eye.

I always love these hand-wavy “I know I’m breaking the law by doing this but don’t sue me because I’m pretending I don’t know” statements.

This is amazing and I will definitely listen to this .
I was super-bummed when Disney bought lucasfilm and threw away most of the old canon. I spent a lot of my youth reading the various Star Wars books in the then official Lucasfilm canon and had a really hard time disregarding all of that with the new trilogy.
So much of that story was thrown away , everything from Han Solo’s origin story to Luke’s time spent creating a new (successful) Jedi academy and Leia and Han’s multiple children was trashed in favor of a much darker storyline.

I did, 35 years ago or so. I remember being so excited about new Star Wars material.
Couldn’t tell you anything about it now.

Doesn’t mean the works they produce are public domain unfortunately. Though apparently Lucas cut them a deal on the source material , licensing radio rights to them for $1.

I guess we can take it like the new Star Trek movies, in which everything is an alternate reality universe with totally different outcomes. Then we pretend we get to choose which universe we are going to live in and ignore the other. Wormhole of the mind, I’ll call it.

The Georgia Tech library had a first edition hardcover of that just randomly chilling in the science fiction section up on the fourth floor. When I was checking it out (would have been back around 2007 or
2008
) I asked one of the library staff if they even knew what it was.
Spoiler: they did not.
Maybe I should have shown my friend the security guard that day
.

At least the star trek moves kicked it all of with ‘Time Travel!!! Everything’s different!!!!’. Star wars gave no excuse, just changed everything pretending it was a continuous story.
If we’re talking messy timelines though X-Men was the worst to keep track of!

I read that 40 years ago, and then re-read it about two years ago. I remember when it came out, we all assumed it was going to be the next movie. I’m glad it wasn’t. Still, it was a pretty enjoyable read.

See, I just don’t get all the angst over the old EU. It was never canon with the movies, was never going to be . Lucas always had a policy of “They’re my toys. You can play with them provided I get my cut, you can only do certain things with them, but I can and will ignore anything you do.” Him leaving changed nothing . It’s not like there’s Disney Firemen roa ming the country burning copies of Tales f rom the Mos Eisley Cantina or Darksaber . LucasA rts just finally nutted up and told us what we already been known: “The movies are canon. Clone Wars (CGI) is canon. The books going forwards are canon. Everything else is not.” Doesn’t take anything away from the enjoyment of those materials, Kennedy and Co just decided to go in a different direction .

You can really see the “Metropolis” influence on the early concept art, right?

I gave up on X-men early on. I try to not demand too much logic from my comic-based entertainment, but at some point, my brain says, “that’s it; I’m out”.

I can’t argue with you and there’s a good deal of reality you have to suspend to watch this genre of entertainment anyway but when they have two different generations in movies at the same time with timelines altering each other at the same time it’s strange as hell!
That being said James McA voy and Michael Fassbender are both amazing in their parts and Fassbender even comes close to the level of emotion and gravitas that Sir Ian Mckellen brought to it.

That was part of what made me peace out. But then as a molecular biologist, accepting the concept that random genetic mutation in humans can spontaneously confer the ability to alter the laws of physics, I had to be already drinking a fair amount of the Kool-Aid.

Sadly, he passed away about a year before I graduated. He was well liked - they put a students and faculty memorial notice up in the library cupola to let people know, and there might have been a couple sentences in the student newspaper.

It’s those people in your day to day life that make a difference in ways you don’t even realize until they’re gone.
